21 Day Challenge: Day 18 > Statement jewelry

I love the proliferation of statement jewelry over the past couple years. A good chunky necklace or big pair of earrings can add so much to an otherwise plain outfit. So bust out that big piece of jewelry you've got lurking in your jewelry box (or maybe make a fun new piece?) and wear it with pride tomorrow. Then show it off in the Flickr group or on your blog!

Keira of A Pretty Penny

Repaired!

Hand-me-down shirt, Skirt from a dress I cut up, thrifted belt, Steve Madden sandals

Out of everything in my repair pile this skirt was the most pressing to me. I LOVE this skirt and wear it constantly so when it got a big grease stain on the side from when I leaned into the car to put Baby 2 in his car seat I was devastated.

Fortunately, this woman from church has recently been preaching the gospel of Shout Advance Greasy Stain Remover (she reads my blog sometimes- hi Erin!!) so I ran and got myself some and lo, I have been converted and will now preach that gospel too. That shiz WORKS. Pulled the stain right out. It also saved an entire load of Aaron's clothes when he forgot to take his brand new totally full tube of chapstick out of the pocket of the jeans and it went through the dryer. Miracles, I tell you!

What'd you repair? Link up below and/or add it to the Flickr group!

21 Day Challenge: Day 17 > Repair it and wear it

via

Edit: We have at least one participant who has not a single item in need of repairs (HOW on earth?) so the alternative prompt for tomorrow, in the event that you really and truly have nothing to repair, is "Break a fashion rule."

Do you have a pile of shame too? That place where you stick clothes that need a new button/ hem fixed/ the sides taken in? Well, for tomorrow I want you to go dig through that repair pile, pick a deserving item, fix it and wear it. And then tell us about it, of course.

Also, one time I duct-taped a hem. If you want to do that I won't judge you at all (I actually might award you a bonus point, depending on how well you hide the tape, come to think of it).

Add your pic to the Flickr group or link up here tomorrow!

Menswear

Thrifted shirt, Wal Mart suspenders, JCPenney skirt, Payless shoes, Target watch, assorted gifted bracelets

You had to know I was going to go with the suspenders.

I actually had something completely different in mind but I was on vacation and so my options were limited and this is what I came up with. I actually really liked the way it turned out, especially with my hair (which you can't really see but was vaguely 40s inspired).

I have to admit though that at one point we went to visit Aaron's aunt and uncle and I felt kind of stupid wearing this. I kept wondering if they thought I was a weirdo for wearing suspenders. I guess I'm not 100% comfortable in my clothes yet!

Quick note of non-challenge related business- I wrote a guest post for Dana of What the Frock while she's away on a fantastic and belated Alaskan honeymoon. It's about my fictional boyfriend, Ned (sigh). Go check it out!

21 Day Challenge: Day 16 > Menswear

It's kind of fun to wear boy clothes sometimes. You can go all out with a tie and button up shirt or go subtle with a chunky watch and menswear inspired shoes or mix something masculine with something really feminine. You can even raid your significant other's closet if you want (I won't tell).

New Hair-do

hairdo
Wearing Max Studio top (from Marshall's), Macy's skirt, gifted necklace, Target watch, Payless shoes (which you can't see)

Roughly inspired by this pin and a handful of others.

I love low buns in theory but in practice there's something about my facial proportions that is better suited to high up-dos. I did some crown teasing with this one though and was really happy with how it turned out. I felt really pretty all day, and isn't that the point?

Quick item of business before we get to the linking- Participants who have been affected by rather inclement weather, I'm thinking of you!! I hope you're all safe and sound. A couple girls emailed or commented and asked if they could be a few days late because of the weather and electricity failures and whatnot. My answer to this is of course. There's a built in 3 day lag period anyway with each link party and the Flickr group has no expiration. Just take your pictures and add them whenever you can! I won't dock points or anything. Stay dry!

Let's see that hair! Link up below or add to the Flickr group.

21 Day Challenge: Day 15 > New hair-do

One of my mantras when I get ready in the morning is "Don't waste a good outfit on bad hair." There have been days when I LOVED my clothes but I didn't feel comfortable because my hair was blah. Your head has the power to make or break your outfit (AND your confidence) so tomorrow I want you to try something new with your hair and build your outfit around it. Try loose waves or a high bun or victory rolls or a crown braid or maybe a new hair accessory. Branch out!

Hair Romance is a great place for hair inspiration if you need some help. And, of course, Pinterest.

If you use a tutorial or an inspiration image, please share it when you blog or post your picture to the Flickr group!

Copycat

Thrifted belt, shirt and dress, Petal and Pink earrings
My inspiration image:

I saw this picture right after I chose my pink shirt as my remix item and I was like, "It's a sign!"

Sadly, I didn't care for this outfit at all. It probably didn't help that I was having a bad hair day and the shirt swallowed my neck and I was generally uncomfortable. Plus it was just..blah.

SO! I declared a redo. I pinned this image from Bex...a style diary a few months ago and realized I could do it with almost the exact same stuff as I used above.

Just a simple switch of a vest for a shirt (and a different day with better hair) aaaand

dress and vest
Thrifted dress and belt, Target watch and shoes, Last Chance vest, Petal and Pink earrings (etsy)

I like it much better. And Aaron was doing the Austin Powers, "Yes. Yes! No! NO!!" while taking pictures. He kills me.

This is probably the prompt I have been MOST looking forward to. I'm so excited to see what you guys did! Link it up here or in the Flickr group!

21 Day Challenge: Day 14 > Be a copycat

A month or so ago I got a really sweet e-mail from a teenage girl looking for fashion advice. She was wondering how you break that mental wall that tells you what should and shouldn't match or work together so that you can try new things without being so self conscious you just want to die.

I told her that, for one, being out of high school helps. But I also told her to copy people. Find inspiration in fashion blogs as well as in catalogs, lookbooks and whatnot. Stuff that comes easily to other people might not come easily to you but once you see someone else pull something off you kind of go, "Oh yeah! I have similar pieces. I could recreate that."

So tomorrow I want you to copy someone. Find an outfit that you loved on someone else and recreate it for yourself using stuff from your own closet. Make it work for your style and body type and make it your own. As always, Pinterest is a great source of inspiration if you're not sure where to start.

If possible, please link to your inspiration image when you blog or post your pic to the Flickr group.

After all, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery!

Neutral with a Pop

Gap dress, DEB undershirt, thrifted belt, Payless shoes

I had something completely different in mind and this outfit bored me to tears but I knew I was going to be spending 6ish hours in the car with 2 small children, one of whom is no longer in diapers and has a bladder the size of a walnut. This wound up being perfect (the belt is elastic and quite comfortable). It did end up getting a little pee on it during a roadside emergency pit stop so I'm kind of glad I wasn't wearing anything I really cared about.

The joys.

(This picture was taken on the 28th floor of this hotel, by the way. It was pretty swanky)

21 Day Challenge: Day 13 > Neutral with a pop

I love neutrals with a pop of color (in rooms as well as in clothes). It's classic but still kind of unexpected.

Your pop can be anything...an accessory, a skirt, a lipcolor. Have fun with it!

Jazzing My Jeans

Mervyn's top, Gap Jeans, F21 bracelets, old wedges, Aaron's belt

Yes, those are jazz hands. I couldn't help myself.

Sorry guys, I screwed up a bit on this one. I mistyped the prompt when I did the weekly list and put "jeans and a tee" when it was just supposed to be "jeans." So..pretty much whatever you do today is fine by me as long as you're wearing denim.

I MEANT to just says jeans and let you take it whatever direction you want. I forced myself to do a t-shirt because I don't wear them that much anymore and I always feel kind of frumpy. I decided as long as I do my hair and throw on a couple bangles then it at least looks intentional.

I was searching for a rogue bobby pin that was jabbing me and Aaron snapped. Reminds me of this pic of Blake Lively. If only...

How'd you fancy up your denim? Link up below!

21 Day Challenge: Day 12 > Jazz up your jeans

*Sorry guys, I screwed up! I mistyped the prompt in the weekly list as "jeans and a tee" when it was just supposed to be "jeans." You can do jeans and a tee or you can do jeans and a button up. Whatever, as long as you're wearing denim.

I think it's fair to say that jeans are a staple for most people. They're comfortable, versatile, and come in a huge range of styles and price ranges. Odds are good that you A. own a pair of jeans and B. wear them constantly.

The problem is that jeans go just as well with a frumpy t-shirt as a silk top or blazer and, in our casual culture, people tend to reach for the frumpy t-shirt first. So for I want you to bust out those jeans but jazz them up. Go fancy or rock and roll or office chic or whatever, but don't go frump.
