My friend Raquel holds a yearly Christmas treat exchange and always requests that attendees sport some specific Christmas attire. Last year was aprons (mine was awesome but I got sick the day of and ended up staying home) and this year was Christmas sweaters.
I am not really a Christmas sweater person. Even to be funny. I'm lame that way.
But last week I happened to stumble across this Phillip Lim sweater and thought, "You know...I'd maybe wear that."
I mean, I'd maybe wear it if I ran across it at Goodwill for $3. But I would not pay anywhere near the $385 Net-a-Porter has it listed for. Mostly because I would never pay that much for anything besides like..kitchen appliances (I'm getting a Vita-Mix for Christmas! Woot!).
Anyway, I knew I could DIY it. I still had some leftover gray jersey from the tunic from this post and I've always got freezer paper and fabric paint on hand. I found a simple reindeer graphic and did a not-as-quick-as-I-would-have-liked freezer paper stencil (for future reference: large stencils should be done in pieces if you value your sanity).
I really love the end result. I've worn it a few times already and I'm kind of thinking maybe I need a few more...

If you've never done freezer paper stenciling before take a look at my tutorial for a few tips and tricks to make sure your end result comes out perfectly!
I love that, and I would also love if you told me how to make that shirt, sans the reindeer.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
Sounds like SO much fun and yours ... so creative. We like yours much better than the original!
ReplyDeleteI totally want to make one of these now!
ReplyDeleteVery nice. Casually festive and modern, not an easy combination to achieve with clothing!
ReplyDeletePretty sure I need to get into freezer paper stenciling...that is gorgeous. Better than the Phillip Lim one, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteVery cute, Kayla!! Not cheesy, either!
ReplyDeleteI love your sweater! The color and the design.
ReplyDeleteI like yours better than the original. Feel free to send one my way for Christmas. :)
ReplyDeleteNorth Meets South
I LOVE your version - it is so cute, and even better than the ridiculously expensive inspiration sweater. You are seriously crafty & talented!
ReplyDeleteThat sweater is actually really cute! I think maybe it's the gray and white contrast that I'm a sucker for. Either way I'm impressed by your creativity! I love it!
ReplyDeletesuper pretty+you are ridiculously skinny. hope that doesn't sound mean. it should come off as: I'm jealous. ;)
ReplyDeleteYou are so creative! I am jealous of all of your skills :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea!!!
ReplyDeleteNew follower : )
SUPER CUTE!!
ReplyDeleteI love it!!!! nice job! I'm a new follower. : )
ReplyDeleteThe reindeer shirt is so cute. I want one!
ReplyDeleteThat is soo cute! Great job on your DIY...
ReplyDeleteOh, your sweater is totally wearable!! I wish I were crafty like that. I'm scared to even try doing what you did. lol
ReplyDeleteOoo me gusta! Did the paint not dry stiff?
ReplyDeletenice! that turned out pretty awesome.
ReplyDeleteWe needed to make a point during the night that you MADE YOUR SWEATER!!! You should've won, if everyone knew you made it...it wouldn't have evem been a contest! I love it and I have got to try the freezer paper stencil sometime
ReplyDeleteThat is so cute! And looks easy too!
ReplyDeleteLove!
ReplyDeleteCompletely amazing! I need to get some of that freezer paper, stat!
ReplyDeleteWhere did you find your deer stencil? I tried to make one but I'm no good at freehand! Kind of just looked like a strange dog when I was finished butchering the freezer paper.
ReplyDelete@birminghambell it was a while ago but I'm pretty sure I googled "reindeer clip art" or something and just found one I liked then printed it out really big. I definitely did NOT freehand it! I'm not that talented.
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the sweater from?
ReplyDeleteI sewed it.
DeleteHey Kayla, I'm assuming you didn't have a pattern for you sweater, but could you give us some tips slash measurements on how to make the sweater itself? I loved the wider sleeves and the loose neck!
ReplyDeleteIt's been a while but I'm fairly certain I just traced another top that I liked the fit of. That's my go-to method when it comes to patterns! I'm sorry I can't give you more direction than that!
DeleteAny tips on how you made sure your stencil didn't move during the process? That would be my biggest concern.
ReplyDeleteThat's the point of using freezer paper. It's stuck to your fabric so it doesn't move. I do a sheet of freezer paper on the back too so it's all immobile and the paint doesn't leak through.
DeleteOh wow, this is adorable! I still don't have a christmas jumpers. But after seeing this wonderful creative, i would love and make fan of your. How freezer paper and fabric paint and graphic used really awesome.
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of fabric paint do you use?
ReplyDeleteHi Kayla!
ReplyDeleteYour refashion looks gorgeous, so I've featured it into a Sweater Refashion Roundup (also if technically it's not a sweater... but it could be!!).
I'm now following you everywhere (virtually - I'm not a stalker!)
Hugs from Italy,

I realize it been a while... but I would love to try this!! I am having difficulty getting the silhouette to come out the correct size. Could you share how you enlarged yours? Better yet, would you be willing to share your stencil?? Your shirt/sweater came out much better than the inspiration piece!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
