21 Day Challenge: Day 5 > Belt it

Quick items of business-

1. Digging through your archives for an appropriate outfit and then submitting the link does not count as participating in the challenge and from here on out I will be deleting those. Sorry! There's some leeway with time (72 hours to submit to each party) so you can be a couple days behind but that's all.

2. Your submission must actually be of the prompt. I've had a couple weird ones that I had to delete. And yes, I am checking each and every submission, so I DO notice those. I am dedicated!

3. The most common thing I read yesterday was, "This was really hard for me but I actually really like my outfit!" This gives me warm tingly fuzzies all over. Look at you guys! You can do hard things! And look all stylish while doing those hard things! I kind of feel like my work here is done and that was only day 3.

Moving on-

I thought belting tops, dresses, cardigans, etc. was a fairly standard thing until I suggested to a friend that she could throw a belt over this rather diaphanous dress she was eyeballing in the store. She looked at me like I had sprouted another head and I realized that belting may not be this automatic thing to people.

But belts are so wonderful! You can belt up high or go low-slung. Wide or thin or super skinny. Color! Texture! Belts add instant interest to an outfit and they go with just about everything.

But here's the thing: if you ever tell me that you went to a store and paid full price for a belt I will smack you. In the head. Thrift stores are positively swimming in belts of all colors, shapes and sizes and they're like a dollar. At that price point you can afford a whole bunch and have all kinds of belting fun with your outfits.

For some of you this will be a super easy day (I've already seen a LOT of belts so far) but some of you will have to take a deep breath and make a go of it!

  4. It's funny, I almost never wear a belt to belt my pants!

Love the J.Crew look... I would never think to belt over a scarf.

  7. I just wanted to say that I have enjoyed watching the ladies participate in this challenge. We follow quite a few of them and it's been fun watching from the sidelines! I am going to have to try the belt over the scarf look in the photo above. That is pretty cool!

  9. Okay so I'm not participating in the whole 21 day challenge ... is that alright? (hope so) But, that being said "put a belt on it" is one that I can do. ;)

  10. I seriously went to the thrift store in preparation for the 21 day challenge (first time in probably 10 years!) and I could not believe the belts!! $1!?!? Awesome!!

  11. Can't wait! I'm a belt girl! And I completely agree...paying full price for a belt is NUTS! I almost did, one time, at Target but thankfully I pulled out at the last second. They wanted 14 bucks for a skinny belt!
And I'm kind of a belt hoarder. Shhh...don't tell anyone!

  12. Your challenge is so much fun! Love belts but I think I have bought too many at full price.

  13. Thank you so much for this 21 day Challenge!! My daughter, Emily, has accepted it whole heartedly and loves it. She is even using it for a Value Project for her Personal Progress. She is making modest choices, using what she has, and budgeting for things that she would like to add to her wardrobe to make it more versatile. I haven't seen her this excited in a long time! :)

  14. Okay, Stephanie, the part about your daughter doing this as a Personal Progress project just about brought a tear to my eye. That is so sweet & I hope she has a great time doing it! Am pretty sure my own YW years would have been a lot less heinous if something like this had been available! ;-)

  15. I really like the look of belts and often attempt them, but never leave the comfort of my own room with one on. I simply feel like it draws too much attention to my least attractive feature--my chubby tummy. I"m not sure how to wear a belt in this situation. Short of loosing ten pounds and executing 100 sit ups on a daily basis, I don't think I'll ever feel comfortable wearing a belt in such an emphatic fashion. Any special tricks? Words of encouragement?

  17. I will say, tho, that SOME thrift stores don't have the best belt selection. I have an absolutely amazing thrift store here, and they only ever have like 3 or 4 belts at a time, and they're cracked and gross usually... I still look, though, searching for the jackpot. But regardless, full price is ridic. Check discount stores, like TJMaxx or Marshalls or Ross, and go straight to their clearance accessories. They're marked way down from SRP. Maybe not $1, but still $5 is better than $25, right? Also, I just fell in love with the scarf belt look, and those have so many purposes it's a better investment.

  18. Oh my GOODNESS why are you so stinkin' hilarious?!? "If you ever paid full price for a belt, I will smack you. In the head." I almost died! Whew!

But the most I've ever paid for belts are the skinny ones at H&M that come in a pack of 3 for $12.95 and I don't think that's too bad. Right?

  19. This was the hardest one for me so far. I'm just not a belt person. Of course, I only have about 3 belts. I guess I'll have to start looking for them at the thrift store.
