Thank You Thank You

Thank you so much for all the wonderful responses on my questionnaire yesterday! The turn out was way better than I could have dreamed. I was worried no one would want to tell me about themselves but I needn't have worried. I'm slowly working my way through the responses and I've had so much fun reading your blurbs and hopping around to everyone's blogs and learning about your lives and hobbies.

Also, I clearly didn't preview that post ahead of time because I had no idea it wouldn't fit in the center area (I have a snippet of CSS code that constrains my pictures. Apparently it doesn't work for Google forms). And I have no clue how to fix it (sorry!). But my dear friend Becca said that the Tab key will get you past those annoying side buttons so you can fill it out properly and click Submit. Hopefully that will help everyone who couldn't finish filling it out.

Anyway, I had a few questions that I thought I might answer. A few others deserve their own posts but these I can do real quick:

Q: do you wear your shoes in your house or just for the shoots? Don't your kids mess up your cute clothes?

A. I do occasionally wear shoes in the house but I DO try to get out of the house at least once every day (lest I lose my ever-loving mind) and that's when I wear my shoes. It's really rare that I put on a pair of shoes JUST for pictures. And my kids definitely do mess up my clothes occasionally (there was a poop incident last week I'd rather not talk about). Baby 2 in particular loves to mash his face and hands into the back of my skirts while I'm cooking which means there's usually graham cracker shmootz on my backside. A few months ago I found a raisin stuck to the inside of one of my shirts. AFTER it had been through the wash. I've learned to live with it.

Q. Why don't you talk more about being a mom and raising your kids?

A. I got a LOT of comments saying they wished I would talk more about my kids and personal stuff. A few people asked for pics of my kids so they could put faces to the pseudonyms, which I totally understand. When I read through this blog it kind of feels like they're imaginary since you don't ever see them (well, except for a little Stinky in this post).

My old blog talked quite a bit about my kids and then I realized the world is too scary to put my sweet little ones out there like I was. I don't mind posting the occasional outdated photo of my kids though. I don't think you could recognize them today from these photos but they do give you faces, so I'll share-

Me and Stinky in 2009 (I miss those sunglasses so much. And that baby roundness. He's such a little boy these days)

Baby 2 in June 2010 (he slept in his car seat for FIVE MONTHS. Hello, we are maybe a little ghetto over here)

Q. Where do you get your fabrics? How did you start sewing?

A. JoAnns and SAS. And I just sort of bulldozed my way into it. I am nothing if not completely confident in my own ability to handle projects that should probably be outside my reach. My mom gave me her sewing machine a few years ago, taught me how to thread it and do a straight stitch and sent me home. Shortly after that I reupholstered a chair. I do a lot of Googling and then I sit down and do it. That's kind of my philosophy on a lot of things, actually.

Q. Could you please Photoshop your face onto my outfit pics?

A. I'm not sure why you'd want me to, but....

My head + one of my favorite of Erica's outfits
I aim to please.

And I'm working on your skirt, you crazy lady.

Q. Are you ever going to do skirt tutorials??

A. I got a lot of variations on this question and the answer is: maybe. The truth is, I'm really terrible at tutorials and there are so many good ones already out there (plus: they know what they're doing whereas I am making it up as I go along). But it sounds like there's some demand so I'll see what I can do. It's really hard to photograph yourself doing things that require two hands. But my sister is in town for ten (!) days so maybe I can rope her into helping me with this.

Q. Could you change up your posing? And go somewhere other than your backyard?

A. I KNOW. I'm totally a one trick pony here but a. posing gets embarrassing fast and b. getting out to take outfit pictures at the right time of day is really hard (good lighting = dinner time + kids are awake). I'll work on the posing. And I HAVE been branching out with my outfit locations a tiny bit. I will continue to try to get out more.

Q. Can you talk more about your amazing sister?

A. Well, I CAN tell you that she is awesome. And cheeky.

Also, I'm SO glad so many people like my Fashion Blogger (for a day) series. Honestly, that's probably my favorite part of my blog and it's nice to know that others enjoy it as well. I loved hearing about how they've inspired you to discard the sweat pants and try a little harder. It totally made me feel like all the time and effort I pour into this blog is worth it.

Thank you thank you thank you!!! You are all fantastic and I just really like you a lot. The sense of community and the friends I make have always been my favorite part of blogging and reading the responses yesterday just reinforced that for me.

And if you haven't had a chance to tell me about yourself yet, you can find the form here.

  1. Thanks for sharing! It's fun learning more about yo. And it's nice to know that you learned to sew kind of on your own! I might attempt that.

  2. Love the answers, and the pics of Stinky and Baby 2 (CUTE!). I too would love to hear more about your life and being a mom, but totally get the need to find that balance with privacy, and think you do a great job. And I must say, I'm a fan of your backyard outfit pictures - switching it up is nice, but there is comfort in routine!

  4. Yes, you HAVE inspired me to "get dressed" more often instead of live in my pj's. :)

  5. Last night I was raving to my hubby about your blog and a few others that have been inspiring me in the fashion dept. All the DIY stuff and mixing and matching...I was scrolling through the blogs showing him all this stuff and he ever so sweetly pretended like he cared. And then it hit me and I realized be probably (definitely) did not. That's love! Early Mother's Day gift?! :)
    Keep the good stuff coming!

  7. I love it - I, too, feel like a one trick pony always posing in my back yard but it is definitely the easiest when you have little dudes who are into everything!
